Postdoctoral researcher Nikolaos M. Papadakis, affiliated with the School of Production Engineering and Management and the Institute of Computational Mechanics and Optimization (Co.Mec.O), under the direction of professor Georgios E. Stavroulakis, has been appointed by the Hellenic Organization for Standardization (ELOT) as an expert for the ISO Technical Committee 43 (Acoustics) / Subcommittee 1 (Noise) / Working Group 54 (Perceptual Assessment of Soundscape Quality). Working Group 54, which comprises approximately 30 members worldwide, is responsible for the ISO 12913 series of standards (revision of Parts 1, 2, and 3, and development of Part 4).
Soundscape acoustics extends the more traditional approach of Environmental Acoustics (as well as Architectural Acoustics) by incorporating also how the acoustic environment is experienced by individuals. This approach is being integrated into legislation and national environmental strategies, as recently in Wales and is expected to expand in many countries in the coming years.
