Undergraduate Studies

The studies at the School of Production Engineering and Management of the Technical University of Crete are aimed at the education and high-level technical training of engineers in the design, management, and operation of production systems of goods and services. The purpose of the undergraduate studies program aims to empower students towards recognizing and solving complicated technical problems, which currently require a holistic approach covering technological, economic, social, and environmental factors.

The academic year has two semesters, the fall semester, and the spring semester. Each course has duration of one semester and includes:

  • lectures,
  • tutorials,
  • laboratory exercises,
  • practical training,
  • seminars (given by industry experts), and
  • visits to production plants and companies.

The undergraduate program has a total duration of ten (10) semesters, with the first nine semesters devoted to coursework and the final semester to a diploma thesis. Courses are grouped into three categories: (a) core (obligatory) courses, (b) electives, and (c) general electives. The undergraduate degree is conferred upon the successful completion of all core courses, a specific number of elective courses and the diploma thesis.

Courses are grouped according to their subject areas in seven (7) groups:

  1. Group I: Mathematical - Physical Sciences;
  2. Group II: Humanities – Foreign Languages;
  3. Group III: Electromechanical Systems;
  4. Group IV: Information Systems;
  5. Group V: Production Systems;
  6. Group VI: Operations Research, and;
  7. Group VII: Management & Administration.

For each group, a number of elective courses are offered. Students should select and successfully complete exactly two (2) courses from electives in Group II and at least: one (1) course from electives in Group III; one (1) course from electives in Group IV; one (1) course from electives in Group V; one (1) course from electives in Group VI; one (1) course from electives in Group VII.

A total of 300 ΕCTS are required for the undergraduate degree. The coursework Grade Point Average (GPA) is computed as a weighted average of the grades received for each of the courses successfully completed. The course weights depend on the course ECTS. The Diploma Grade is computed by adding the course GPA, multiplied by a coefficient of 4/5, and the diploma thesis grade, multiplied by a coefficient of 1/5.

According to Greek Regulation, the Diploma of Production Engineering and Management is recognized as Integrated Master's degree.
